This national Tier 1 contractor are looking for an experienced Quantity Surveyor or Senior QS to take responsibility for the Groundworks & Civil Engineering aspect of a major project in Newton Abbot.

Working within a larger commercial team made up of other QS’, Senior QS’ and Commercial Managers, you will be expected to carry out general Quantity Surveying duties, working closely with the Senior Management Team and providing commercial assistance throughout the business.

This is a permanent role, offering a salary between £55,000-£65,000 & car package depending on experience.

We are looking for someone to take charge of The Minor Works package. The scale and scope of these projects vary, but their approach does not, delivering all projects with the same quality, diligence and professionalism, with a client base of multiple repeat users.

As a Contracts Manager you will oversee the planning, management, and execution of minor works contracts across a range of sectors, including commercial, education, heritage, local authority/government and MoD.

The role requires a combination of strong project management and pricing skills to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required standards. The successful candidate will manage multiple projects simultaneously, develop client relationships, and work closely with subcontractors, suppliers, and internal teams.

The role:

  • Tender preparation – reviewing, specification and preparing costs, value engineering
  • Cost breakdowns of labour, material, plant, subcontract quotes/negotiation
  • Budget management – monitor project costs, variations and cost reporting
  • Project delivery – compliance with the contract specifications
  • Programming – project time scales, labour and materials
  • Client liaison – the main point of contact for the client
  • Quality Control – work in progress, QA, building regulations
  • Health & Safety – ensure all projects adhere to HSE standards and expectations

What you need:

  • Proven track record of contract management and estimating, ideally in minor works – £50,000 – £1m
  • Relevant construction qualification, along with SMSTS, CSCS – black or White card is a must.
  • Strong knowledge of construction processes, contracts – JCT/NEC and building regulations.
  • Excellent commercial acumen and analytical skills for estimating and budgeting.
  • Strong leadership skills in managing site teams, subcontractors etc.
  • The role will require DBS/ SC clearance and a full driving license.

The Role:

  • 80% Estimating, 20% QS’ing
  • Drylining/internal/painting.
  • Based in Barry but occasionally needed on-site (mileage covered)
  • The Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates, managing tenders, and ensuring projects remain within budget.

The Candidate:

  • Minimum 3  years of experience in estimating, ideally within the interior fit-out and drylining sectors. Construction experience required.
  • Education: Degree or diploma in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field preferred. Relevant industry certifications are a plus.
  • Strong understanding of construction processes, particularly in drylining, partitioning, ceilings, and interior finishes (preferable)
  • Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., ConQuest, Causeway, or similar), Microsoft Office Suite, and experience working with AutoCAD drawings.
  • Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to perform detailed cost analysis and produce accurate estimates.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present estimates and tender proposals clearly and professionally.
  • Strong negotiation skills when dealing with subcontractors, suppliers, and clients to achieve cost-effective solutions.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work to deadlines in a fast-paced, competitive environment
